Exchange on MRV experiences in Tunisia

Exchange on MRV experiences in Tunisia

A two-day reciprocal exchange of experiences under the title “The Implementation and Enhancement of MRV Systems in Tunisia and Turkey” took place in Tunisia, 30-31 January 2018.

The workshop was organized by GIZ Turkey MRV Project team together with GIZ Tunisia. Representatives from Ministry of Environment and Urbanization (MoEU) of Republic of Turkey joined the event. From Tunisian side, representatives from Ministry of Local Affairs and Environment, Ministry of Energy of Republic of Tunisia, National Agency for Energy Conservation, National Office of Sanitation and National Chamber of Cement manufacturers participated in the event.

The first day started with opening remarks from both Tunisian and Turkish sides. Afterwards, Tunisian NDC and Turkish INDC (Intended Nationally Determined Contributions) implementations were introduced, as well as overall climate change policies and measures for sectors in both countries. Turkey explained the legal and institutional framework of their MRV system, as well as its accreditation and verification system; whereas Tunisia informed about their approach on MRV with special focus on the energy sector.
The second day started with Turkey explaining the stakeholder’s engagement process, giving sectorial examples from cement and electricity sectors. Tunisia then presented MRV case examples from their NAMA sectors (cement, building, waste water, energy efficiency in the industry). As the MRV systems in both countries differ, more technical details were explained in the following sessions.

Important lessons learnt in both countries were conveyed throughout the presentations on both days and lead to active and fruitful discussions. The event was a success for all attending parties and marked the last of two dissemination activities of the MRV Turkey project with countries in the region.
