“The Role of the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) System on the Road to the Emissions Trading System” Panel Held

The Capacity Development  for the Implementation of a Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Project, considered a significant milestone for Türkiye’s journey toward a sustainable future, brought together public institutions and industry representatives at a recent event. The project, which plays a critical role in the transition to the Emissions Trading System (ETS), provided an effective platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The program was conducted in two sessions: morning and afternoon. The morning session focused on opening speeches and sharing project achievements. The session began with speeches by officials from the TR Climate Change Directorate and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and continued with a presentation of the achievements and outcomes of the MRV Project over the past 10 years.

“The Role of MRV on the Road to ETS” Panel Held
In the afternoon session, a panel was held where panelists shared their views and assessments regarding MRV and ETS systems. The panel explored topics such as the critical role of the MRV system in ETS, data security, anticipated changes across sectors, and sustainability policies in detail.

A Success Story: Collaboration Between Turkey and Germany
Launched in 2013, the MRV Capacity Development Project was implemented with the goal of developing a system that enables Türkiye to monitor and report its greenhouse gas emissions in accordance with international standards. Today, this goal has turned into a tangible success story: approximately 50% of Türkiye’s total greenhouse gas emissions are reliably managed through the system developed under the project, covering over 800 facilities’ monitoring plans and annual reports.

This success stands out as a product of strong collaboration between Türkiye and Germany under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). It is expected that the cooperation between the two countries will continue to strengthen in the fight against global climate change and Türkiye's journey toward sustainability and its 2053 net-zero target.
